The purpose of notarization is to prevent fraud and forgery. A notary acts as an official and unbiased witness to the identity of persons who comes before the notary for a specific purpose. Please note that a notary is affirming that a person signing a document is who they say they are. We may not give legal advice or advise in any way which form to sign or in what manner. Please consult an attorney for this.
Brownwood Library notary staff are not attorneys licensed to practice law in Texas and may not give legal advice or accept fees for legal advice.

- Please do not sign your documents before you come to the library. We are required to see you sign your documents.
- When notarizing, the document will be skimmed for blanks. Documents will not be notarized if there are blanks. (The signer, at his or her sole discretion, may choose to line through each space or write ‘not applicable’.) Also, all signatures must be original and made in black ink.
- Each person signing the document must be present for us to notarize that signature.
- Photo identification for all signers and witnesses is required. The following types of photo I.D. are acceptable if they are not expired:
- Valid driver’s license or identification card issued by a U. S. state
- United States Passport
- Other U. S. government issued identification card that includes a picture and the signature of the person.
- In situations where a witness is required, the person requesting notary services must bring a witness who personally knows the individual requesting the service. The witness must bring government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver’s license, passport). Library staff and patrons cannot act as a witness.
