1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
This literacy program encourages you to read 1000 books with your child by the time he or she starts kindergarten. Multiple studies have shown that children in families who read together start school stronger, with better language skills and vocabulary.
Before the start of their formal education, parents and caregivers educate children on the skills they need to learn to read. 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an informal program designed to encourage families to read together. How does it work?
Sign up at the library. Every pre-kindergarten child who signs up will be able to take home a book to keep! (While supplies last.)
Every time you read a book, mark off until you get to 1,000 books! Kids may place a sticker on the banner for each 100 books. At 1,000 books, they’re eligible to graduate from 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten! |
Frequently Asked Questions
1000 Books? Are you Crazy?
Not exactly. Picture books read fast. If you sign up your child at birth and read just one picture book a day, they’ll reach the goal before they turn three years old. Or read three picture books a day and you’ll complete the program in less than a year. My child is entering Kindergarten tomorrow. Can I still sign them up? Quick, sign them up today! Any child who hasn’t entered Kindergarten is eligible to sign up and get a free book. Maybe they won’t read 1,000 books before entering Kindergarten, but that’s OK! The important part is developing those early literacy skills and enjoying reading as a family. Can other people read to my child? Yes, anyone can read to your child! Grandparents, babysitters, siblings, etc.! The more the merrier! What if we keep reading the same book over and over again? Every time you read a book (even if it’s 149th reading), mark it as a book read. |
