Will you join me in supporting the library's future?

This Christmas season, I am asking you to make a donation to impact the literacy of children in Brown County. I’d like to tell you about the impact the Brownwood Library made on just one child.

Lily (name changed) hated reading. For all of her 8 years, it had been a daily struggle.

“Every day it was a battle that usually ended with both of us in tears,” said Lily’s mom, “She became so frustrated that she didn't even want to try anymore.”

I’ll let you know what happened next in a moment, but first I want to tell you about the situation we’re facing here in Brown County. Did you know that the Brownwood Community Library, a non-profit library, is the sole public library serving the 38,095 residents of Brown County? Some Brown County children are as far as 35 miles away from the Brownwood Library.

These rural communities are often the ones that need a library the most. A recent study found that “non-rural
students increasingly outperform rural students from grades 3 to 8. This shift is likely driven by significantly larger learning loss for rural students during summers.”

So what happened to Lily? Her mom signed her up for the Brownwood Library’s 2024 Summer Reading Club. Lily struggled to read that first hour. But when she returned to the library, she turned in her reading log and spun the bead dispenserWow. Did you hear that? Our rural kids are being left behind not because of the schools, but because of the summers!
That’s why it’s so important for kids to keep their minds active over school breaks with programs like the library’s Summer Reading Club.

The good news is that you can make a difference for the children in Brown County. Will you partner with the
library’s literacy efforts this coming year?
On her first spin, she won an animal-shaped bead. She chose a dolphin — her favorite animal!

From that point, she was hooked. She would ask to read at least once a day. All summer she proudly wore her bead necklace. She went from a first-grade reading level to reading at grade level in one summer!

“I am so proud of her and grateful for the summer reading program,” said Lily’s mom. “My daughter now loves to read. She cannot wait for next year's summer reading program.”

Children in our community need your help. Your charitable contribution makes more literacy opportunities and incentives possible for every child (and adult) in Brown County.

I could not be more grateful for your commitment to ensuring that our children have access to the same level of literacy and educational resources that they would have in any big city.

This winter, we will be launching the Winter Reading Challenge, giving kids (and adults) incentives and motivation to read for pleasure over the Christmas break. Kids log hours in-person or online, making it easy for even the kids living in
Zephyr, Blanket, Grosvenor, and other rural parts of the county to easily participate.

Will you help reach and encourage more readers like Lily?

Will you partner with me this Christmas season to support the literacy of children in our community?
