Will you join me in supporting the library's future?

Donate now!
I have a dream. I dream that Brownwood will again have a Library that is the pride of our community.

The library needs $10,000 for a master plan to shape the library’s future. Will you join me in contributing?

Perhaps you know that the Brownwood Library was started with Andrew Carnegie's support in 1904. I love to see the passion in the letter our community sent to Mr. Carnegie's secretary:

In 1977, folks wanted to ensure a future library for generations of families. They set up an endowment, to help the library weather bad times. All of our community leaders signed that letter. (Read the letter and see the signatures!)

Brownwood Library has always been unique. While most libraries are city or county libraries, our library is a true community library. The Brownwood Library is a non-profit, while receiving some support from local government. But without your support, we may not have a library into the future.

In 1977, folks wanted to ensure a future library for generations of families. They set up an endowment, to help the library weather bad times.

Samuel R. and Mattie Coggin donated land that original library was built on (and the current library sits on). Contingent land owned by Samuel's deceased brother, M.J. Coggin, completed the library's original plot, which originally included the entire block that the library and Adams Street Community Center now sit on.

Sadly, that endowment earned low interest for many years. But since 2019, it’s been earning strong interest with the Community Foundation of Abilene. The endowment fund is building a foundation for the Library's future.

How is the library doing now? The current building was completed in 1966. It’s a wonderful building that has served our community for many years. But it has had few updates. Ever. The furniture and spaces all meet the needs of a ‘60s community.

It’s time to create a space that meets the needs of our dynamic, diverse, and innovative community.
We need your help to create a library cherished for our community. This is not my library. This is your library. This is the community’s library. If we are to succeed, we need you to be a part of it.

A master plan will cost about $10,000. New furniture, fixtures, and design will cost many times that amount. We are seeking grants and foundations, but nothing will happen without your support.

Maybe we’ll even expand the library. Wouldn’t it be incredible if we could combine the Library and Adams Street Community Center into one amazing library?

Will you join me in donating to the library and taking the first steps towards creating a library that becomes the pride of this community?
